Found this book informative considering a rather ignored area of clock making that produced some fine clocks so out of fashion now, I would recommend it also for its practical aspects of repairing and restoring these clocks.
This was a Christmas gift for my Dad and he was extremely grateful for it as he restores all types of clocks as a hobby. The marble clocks so popular in Victorian age are gaining respect and admiration by the day, so its great to see a book about them at last! These clocks look superb sitting on their intended soul mates - the stone fire mantle. Nicolas Thorpe is an engineer by profession and takes us through the subject in an ordered and methodical manner. Literature this isn't't, but it is a great source of information, starting with the history of the clockmakers, leading through technical aspects of restoration and design it concludes with an excellent reference of collectors' clocks, makers and marks.
Also there is a good chapter describing the process of mining and types of marble.
Dating french clocks
If you are interested in French Marble Clocks you must have this book! A canter through the history of makers is useful in understanding how designs have evolved and what is collectable. The section on restoration and repair is excellent and gives a clear idea of movement design and areas where repair and restoration will be encountered. The final section on slate is mixed up with a review of makers and models. Interesting but, possibly, the subject of separate treatment? An excellent foray into uncharted territory.
