Bosch Magneto

The various insulating materials seem to have a dissipation factor around 4 and epoxy is right in the same area. Originally Posted by D'you reckon the inductances are the same as before? Primary with the points condenser, the secondary with the sum of the distributed coil capacitance and wiring capacitance. Being coupled, the better the coupling the more effect they have on one another, but with the saturated magnet in-circuit, the coupling may not be nearly as good as with a regular transformer, since there is a good-sized effective gap.

More so due to the mechanical arrangement of a fairly "fat" HV coil with a good deal of space for uncoupled flux.

I would suppose the best output to occur when both primary and secondary circuit share a resonance. It may be that the leakage inductance, or the distributed capacitance, is different than it was originally, and as a result the primary and secondary are not sharing a resonance.

That could cut the effective "boost factor" composed of the turns ratio plus a resonance effect in the secondary which is no longer present to the same degree in our assumption. Presumably in the original case, you matched the turns and construction better, and obtained a common resonance well enough to get a hotter spark. Since you don't have the device, no way to tell for sure, but I am quite confident it would work this way, as I have seen it before. You did what I would do which is to try different capacitances It's an interesting problem. Too bad we won't know if my theory is actually the operative one here It could easily work elsewhere which it does and still not be the issue here.

It had a boosting factor of about 5x what the turns ratio would predict.

This is predictable from a circuit analysis at the frequency of the primary resonance, which will show a voltage boost in the L-C circuit according to Q and input frequency. Originally Posted by JST. Sounds like layer-layer or turn-turn fault. I am not familiar with Henderson magneto, but could it be deteriorated insulation of some parts, like the carbon brush holder or slipring insulation? I have seen old phenolic and Ebonite becoming conductive.

The resistance is still high, but it could reduce the output. Originally Posted by billzweig.

  • What is the bobbin winding resistance? I would be curious to know what range of "miles of windings" it takes to make a good spark. I removed the "prince of darkness" instrument after 25 years of frustration and fitted a WICO unit to the Fordson E27n tractor.

All ignition related troubles just vanished when I did! But I've got the old Lucas bobbin that measures only 4. Originally Posted by TDegenhart. Originally Posted by thermite. It took the coincidence of drive side frequency and secondary resonance to get the voltage. Somewhat similar to your case. If you think you wound it the same way with similar turns, then dunno Especially since you checked it by seeing what gap it would jump Likely it makes little difference in use, as long as it gets a spark of suitable energy on the plug.

You can't tell that much by resistance, depends on the wire size. I once rewound a transformer for an electrostatic paint system. It took a while, especially since the windings could come close to the edges of the Kapton layers but had to stay farther from the edge as the voltage increased to keep from arcing to the core. Posting a photo is not very helpful as magnetoes get rebuilt over the years and are not necessarily as they came from the factory so visual features cannot be relied upon.

The production number tells it all. R Advanced Member Posts: It is mentioned somewhere that the "VCC" published a list of Bosch maggie data about 30 years ago. There was a list of these serial numbers wrt year of manufacture tha was printed in a VCCAustralia Victoria newsletter about 30 years ago. I moved this a couple of weeks ago, so it should not be hard to find for you. Bear in mind that this is the year of the magneto rather than the car; but usually it would be fairly close. D series mags with open magnets generally finished in although you will find some models fitted with them.

I do have a list of serial numbers for Bosch mags from to and could post them if readers think its necessary. DA1 is an open magnet,35 m. February 07, , Thank you, thank you, that is the list I was hoping to see. Unfortunately it doesn't go high enough as obviously Triumph stopped using Bosch magnetoes in when WWI got in the way. There are mythical stories of British DR's trading for Bosch magnetoes in nomans land between the trenches but I think the truth of that is a job for MythBusters.
