Our midwives don't change due date any time after 12 weeks as long as there has been a dating scan or reason to be sure of dates-like ovulation kits but if it appears the baby is getting ahead or behind they monitor a little closer just to keep an eye on things.

Dating us are generally more accurate the earlier they are performed. And even an 8wk us can be off by days, which is probably why doctors won't change due dates unless lmp and us are off by a week or more.

The accuracy goes down with time so a 12wk us being off by 7 days sounds possible. If you know when you ovulated, then I would go with your original due date. I would also not let my doctors move up my edd if I thought my original edd was correct because most doctors won't let you go past 42wks. If the new edd is a week sooner then you may be induced unnecessarily.

I hope this makes sense. Friends of ours conceived by ivf, so they also know pretty much within a Hour window the conception date, but they were bought forward by 6 days during the NT scan. However, they're both almost 6'3" in height, so it's highly likely they'll have a long baby, therefore dates further along.

A dating ultrasound is most accurate, and should actually be done, by 9 weeks at the latest. At that early stage the baby grows almost exactly to the day, and conception can be basically pinpointed. After that, by 12 weeks it's not very accurate. They start to have growth spurts which can happen at different times, so just because your baby measured 13 weeks at what should be 12 weeks might just mean they've had a growth spurt lightly earlier.

For example, my dating scan told me 6 weeks 5 days.

What is the purpose of the dating scan?

This lines up exactly with when I knew I ovulated I used opk so I know for sure when that happened. This would be the correct date. At my 12 week scan the person doing it said the baby now measured over 13 weeks, so a week ahead. Since that was my second scan I know it doesn't line up with my first, and the dr confirmed the earlier scans are most accurate. If you know the date you conceived then you are more accurate than the ultrasound my friend!

I knew when I conceived my first three, this fourth pregnant not so much, but we are just using the approximate date of my last period to calculate and approximate due date which can go 14 days either way anyway, ultrasounds are a tool Archived Discussion This discussion is archived and locked for posting See active discussions on August Babies. Jump to Your Week of Pregnancy. That same day she was born they did an ultrasound and said she was 5lbs 15ozs. She was born at 4lbs 15ozs.

Really surprised the DR. This time I'm dealing with the same thing.

accuracy of dating scan

I know the last day we had a chance of concieving cause afterward my husband was gone. When the Dr did the ultrasound he said I was due March 29th and wasn't as far along as I thought. No i didnt get to ask why d due date was different. The Doc only said thats what the scan is showing. All the same, im sooo happy my baby was doing fine in there and intact cos thats the most important. Since you know your last period, that is what to go by This is definitely confusing to me since with my ultrasound date i'd be 14 weeks today, but my LMP date i'd be 13wks2 days.

Not a big difference, but still a difference of 5 days.

Dating scan accuracy?!

Although I'd rather have a more exact date so I can tell people if i'm 13 or 14 weeks along that makes me either end of first tri or start of second I hate not being prepared. So i'll be ready by March 25th knowing I might not even deliver until i'm into the first week of April. My midwife informed me that the first ultrasound is the most accurate, preferably one done before 10 weeks. After that the baby may differ in size, it could be bigger for it's age or smaller just like when they get out.

I measured a week early at this ultrasound too so it just means our babies are big. My son, Parker measured small my whole pregnancy and he's still little for his age, he's 9 months and still fits in 6 month clothes. My first due date had him born on the 7th of December and at my 20 week he was due the 21st. He was born naturally on the 9th. So I would totally go with the first ultrasound and just plan on having a largish baby if we're still measuring big at the 20 week.
